DSDN 112 Project one proposal
For project one I plan to create an interactive audio experience, a recording of selected words that repeat in order. The user hears these words and associates them to pictures or memories in their head, with each new word in the sequence adding to that which is already visualized, slowly creating a scene which is unique to each person. The goal is to show the user how with the repetition of an ordered list of words, that they can begin to imagine a story form previous experiences and / or add their own thoughts to the picture.
Some of my inspirations that lead me to this stage in the project derived from the tutorial sessions, looking at different ways that the mind wanders while touching, hearing or seeing things that you acknowledge but not necessarily pay attention to.
How I plan on completing this idea is to make multiple recordings of sounds or words, linked in order so that each associates to the previous but not necessarily to the first. Then test them on different people and keep a record of each result. With the outcome being a sequence of words that best interact with users minds to create a vivid story, picture or memory.
The user should find this audio interaction very relaxing yet exciting in that it creates mental imagery unique to each individual.

DSDN 112 studio Four
During this tutorial we presented the one idea that we had chosen from the three done in the previous studio.
The idea that was recommended and i went with was my third idea. I made a recording of a continuous word (the word i chose was 'warm') after repeating it for 30 second i changed the word to 'cold'. After listening to warm for 30 seconds the people i tested defiantly responded to the change in words, and that their mind defiantly started to wander more and more until the change snapped them back. The testing was successful in that area, the main problem i had with this idea was the length of time of the repeating words and the change in words is almost too harsh. Maybe just repeat several words in a sequence to get the user to relax and let their mind wander and interact with the words, no need to be jumped back into reality.

DSDN 112 studio three
In this studio session we were asked to bring three ideas that we could discuss with the group and analyse, which could also lead onto being an interactive object.
The first of my ideas was a game of memory, but rather than using sight as the sense in which to send pictures to the brain i chose touch. The reason for touch was due to my findings of how people will fiddle with object without realising they are doing so. The game would be to test how well the user can remember items with different textures while blindfolded, because often your hands will be doing things without you noticing. For example typing on a keyboard or texting on a cell phone, trying to think about what your fingers and hands are actually doing you start to be unable to carry on with the task. So having a game of memory without sight would be to get the user to realise how much they actually remember with the use of touching, and needing to pay full attention to there hands.
The second of my three ideas was a cover for a cell phone, again cell phones are often held, spun and pulled apart as a means of fiddling. So my idea for a cover would be to make it of a material that feels good to play with, like a koosh ball or silky material of some sort. Transforming your cell phone into a toy or object to fiddle with which you can take with you everywhere you go. Nobody takes an object which is solely for playing with on their day to day adventures, but with an interactive cell phone cover you would be taking it for your phone rather than its alternate purpose which in turn becomes an extra.
For my last idea i focused on how your mind will wander with the monotony of sounds or visuals. So my idea was to have audio repeat a word for a length of time (30secs), then at the end have a different word be said. The mind after hearing the word a few times begins to wander and your senses relax, with the change in words at the end it wakes you up from day dreaming and makes you realise that you weren’t paying attention.

DSDN 112 studio two
For this studio we brought in three interactive objects or toys, in my apartment we don't have any toys so instead i brought along a bottle opener, craft knife and stapler. They are all very interactive objects not only by their uses but also how you go about using them.
A few of the objects and toys that were brought along by others and to me were interesting are listed below.
Stacking cups, these i found interesting due to the speed and agility needed to play, also the holes in the bottom of each cup which makes them useless apart from being used for that specific game, but the holes are there to give the cups a better airflow and making stacking fluid rather than having air preventing the speed.
The koosh ball, i found myself playing with this toy for a long length of time without realising, so a great invention in my opinion. We talked about how replacing parts or changing the ball would affect its fiddling potential, and came to the conclusion that without its bright three colours it wouldn’t have as much visual feedback resulting in faster loss of interest. Another aspect we discussed was whether sound would affect its results but again it is the simple snapping sound when you pull a string and release it that gives you a satisfying feeling.
Wooden beads, these beads gradually changed colour over years of being held and worn, in my opinion it gives the holder a feeling of comfort and security with time, knowing that it has been with you for years and every mark and discolouring has been due to your own touch.
I found that majority of objects or toys that people play with they do so without visual feedback, more of a sound, taste or feel response. This finding has led me into using this idea of how your mind can be fiddling or listening to sounds almost subconsciously. I will use this as a starting ground for my three ideas due on Friday.

DSDN 112 studio one
In this studio session we were asked to being along five objects, one for each of the five senses.
The objects I choose where;
See; I chose a lighter, this we discussed to be maybe more a smell or hear object rather than visual.
Hear; for this I brought a set of keys, the distinct jingle of the keys we found was a good representation for sound.
Taste; my chosen object was a Bic pen, my reasoning was people often put pens in their mouth and it does have a taste and slight smell also.
Touch; I brought along a cell phone due to the wear marks and continuous connection that I has to ones hands.
Smell, for this I was a little stumped, so I brought along a roll on deodorant, I found this has a very distinct smell.
We discussed our chosen items in turn then analysed our own and others. With this analysis we tried to fine one feature that we could abstract and maybe use or be an inspiration for our interactive object in project one.
